About The Rainbow Pantry Project

At Create Action Design, we believe that food is a human right, not a privilege. However, for many of our neighbors in Houston, accessing a reliable meal remains a daily challenge.

The Rainbow Pantry Project was born from a mission to bridge that gap through immediate, grassroots action. We tackle food insecurity by installing and maintaining Little Free Pantry boxes at community partner locations, providing 24/7 access to essentials for those who need them most.

Our work focuses on three pillars of sustainability:

  • Building: Designing and constructing durable, accessible pantry boxes.

  • Expansion: Placing these boxes in high-need areas, beginning with the historic East End.

  • Consistency: Providing ongoing maintenance and ensuring the shelves stay stocked.

This project is fueled by the community, for the community. Through our ongoing fundraiser—featuring our signature "Food is a Human Right" apparel—we ensure that $10 from every shirt sold goes directly toward keeping these pantries standing and full. Forever.

Join us in building a Houston where everyone has a seat at the table.

Rainbow Pantry Project FAQ

What is the Rainbow Pantry Project?

The Rainbow Pantry Project is a community-led initiative dedicated to providing accessible food and hygiene resources to anyone facing food insecurity. While the project is organized and maintained by members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies, our mission is to serve the entire neighborhood regardless of identity or background.

Who can use the pantry?

Anyone in need. We operate on a “Take what you need, leave what you can" basis. There are no residency requirements, income checks, or identity disclosures necessary to access our resources.

Why is it called the "Rainbow" Pantry?

The name reflects the community that stewards the project. We believe that those who have experienced being on the margins are uniquely positioned to build inclusive, high-trust systems of care. The "Rainbow" is our signature of safety, signaling that this is a space of mutual respect for all.

What kind of items do you provide?

We stock a variety of shelf-stable groceries, fresh produce when available, and essential hygiene products (such as soap, toothpaste, and menstrual products). Our goal is to provide items that support the dignity and health of every visitor.

How can I help if I’m not a member of the LGBTQ+ community?

Allies are a vital part of our operations! We welcome volunteers and donors from all walks of life who share our commitment to ending hunger and fostering a culture of kindness.
